Tool & app selection

Do you choose ChatGPT or Perplexity? What about trusting an AI app to log into your accounts? Tool & app selection is the first and most important consideration.

Prompting ChatGPT(+) properly

LLMs like ChatGPT may appear to give a correct answer, but most of the time they don't. Or it's not what you asked for. Learn how to prompt them for both accurate and complete results.

Slop & spam mitigation

"AI slop" and spam in all communities and discussion spaces is increasingly become a serious problem to maintain a healthy community. I show organizations how to mitigate these intrusions.

Public policies & procedures

The public needs to know what your organization's stance is on the use of AI. They also need to know what boundaries are placed on them in discussion spaces.

Streamlined public analytics

You can use AI effectively to help monitor campaign successes, public sentiment of the organization and the community itself, and discover when bad actors are intruding.

AI bots are quickly becoming a plague for discussion-based communities. Whether it’s in a classic forum structure or on modern Discord chat channels, bots (and often real actors) are posting what’s called “AI slop”. AI slop is basically AI-generated text or images excessively published in a particular area, usually not disclosed as AI-generated until someone points it out.

To combat AI slop, one of the first things you need to do is develop policies that help guide the rest of the community to identify what it is and how to report it when AI slop occurs.

There are many text and image AI prompting services out there, and they all appear similar at first glance, but they are not. Let’s focus just on primarily text-based services like ChatGPT and Perplexity to give you a glimpse at how to decide between them.

ChatGPT is great for content creation and creative writing with prompt responses that feel more ‘human’ and fluid to the natural way we discuss problems and get solutions for them. If you’re looking for a ‘friendlier’ prompting service that’s easy to use, ChatGPT is a good start.

Alternatively, you may wish to use a prompt service that is more accurate and analytics, especially say for scientific research and academic work. Perplexity excels here. Perplexity also is better and fact-checking and running detailed analysis of data-heavy tables and other formula. Use Perplexity if your organization is more serious about accurate results.

Be warned though, none of these prompt services are 100% accurate, which is where I can come in to help sort it out for you).

As with many of these questions, it depends. Sorry, I don’t mean to sound like “that guy” who answers without really answering. You came here after all for answers.

I say this with a deep sense of care for your situation, even without knowing what it is yet. This is because every single community and public group I’ve ever worked for has acted a bit differently. In fact, there is only one internal guideline I can suggest that every single organization should follow in this space – don’t blatantly exaggerate and lie to your community, because they will find out the truth one way or another. I promise you that.

Actually, there’s two internal guidelines I must mention here while I’m giving you free advice. The second is don’t ignore your community either. If they ask, “are you using AI?” be ready to answer them.

I hope these few examples give you an idea on challenges organizations face when using AI and how to consider proper communications between the organization and its followers.

Please feel free to contact me at any time to dive deeper into your particular needs. I welcome the outreach and look forward to helping your organization be confident in its public communications!

Our community was in decline. The forums and article comments were filled with spammers, and increasingly arguments between segmented groups. And most recently, AI spammers have been creating further rifts between everyone. Mathew helped turn that all around with some rather simple programs and guidelines we were able to launch in just a few months.

Now, every week we see an increase in improvement. We still work with Mathew on further refinements.
